Summer Workshops
It's been an extremely long winter here in Minnesota, and I know we're all ready for it to end soon, but before we know it it'll be 90F/32C and humid. One of the best ways to overcome this is to take one of my workshops, either by the cool shore of Lake Superior or in the air conditioned printshop at MCAD!
I have three scheduled this summer; one at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, and two at MCAD in Minneapolis, here and here.

Introduction to Clamshell Box Construction
At North House we'll be making a clamshell case. No previous experience is necessary and all materials and tools will be provided.
You'll learn how to build an elegant clamshell portfolio box, suitable for the presentation and storage of photographs, prints, books, or drawings and more. These cases are elegant and practical, and the interlocking tray reduces exposure to light and dust. They're not just limited to flat artwork, but can be used for anything you want to keep and treasure. This is a two-day, weekend workshop.
This container, also known as a Solander box, was named after botanist Dr. Daniel Solander, who sailed aboard the Endeavour to the Pacific Ocean with Captain Cook. He designed this protective box, still in common use in libraries and archives, while cataloging the natural history collections of the British Museum.

MCAD
I will be teaching two separate classes at MCAD this summer: Introduction to Clamshell Box Construction and Introduction to Polymer Photogravure.
The clamshell case class will be a two-day, weekend workshop while the polymer photogravure class will be on Thursday evenings for 5 weeks. Details will be available on the MCAD website on April 24th, with online registration starting on May 1st.
Polymergravure is a non-toxic, faster, and environmentally friendlier alternative to the traditional copperplate photogravure process. Create prints that have the gravity and feel of a 19th century photogravure with the ease of 21st century technology!
This introductory workshop will guide participants through each state of the process from the original image file to the final print. Techniques covered will include how to make the plates using simple Adobe Photoshop techniques and an inkjet printer, how to expose and process the plates, and the various methods of inking, wiping, and pulling prints in the printshop.
